Despite my mother’s suggestions earlier in life to become a plumber (everyone needs a plumber), I thankfully appear to be living and working as an artist / illustrator – my younger self would be very happy with this outcome.
I’m based near Falmouth, Cornwall, in a disused granite quarry. Click here for the Trevone Quarry website.
The land around me has been reclaimed by nature since it was last a working quarry, the large lumps of granite waste being covered in goat willow, gorse, and brambles... buzzards and a pair of ravens circle overhead, weasels bound across the paths, and the air is full of the sounds of birds and bees... and of industry, of a different and quieter variety to that of it's past.
Tucked away about the land there are various workshops and studios of various artists and crafts – a blacksmiths forge, rum distillery, a sculptor, fine art painter, and recording studio being just some.
Some of the land has been turned into small cottage gardens, and the old flooded quarry pool has become an excellent wallowing hole for hot days.
In short, I'm based in an idyllic paradise. It's great.
My surroundings heavily influence my artwork.
When I'm not sat working at my desk, I'll go and admire my four wonderful chickens (such characters!), contemplate whether we need to acquire some studio ducks to help with slug control in the veg garden, sniff and pick some sweet peas, have a chat with someone passing on the bridleway...
At some point I'll take our ridiculous hound out for a walk in the fields surrounding the area, then go past a friends studio to demand a cuppa. Then maybe another friends studio... for another.
I've never enjoyed busy city life – the slow pottering of a country place is what I need.
Patchwork fields, golden bales, ancient paths turned to tunnels by trees, mud (not too deep please), the hooting of owls at night. The turquoise triangle of sea getting wider as we walk forwards, dry rusty bracken, tumbledown granite farm buildings.
I create pieces using collage, gouache, watercolour, colouring pencil, & whatever else comes to hand; aptly enough for my collage based work, my studio itself is actually the old cutting shed from back when the quarry was in use.

FANCY A STUDIO VISIT?
Visitors are welcome to come see me at the studio, you must however book in advance if you'd like to appear. The track down here is mega bumpy, but don't let this country charm discourage you. |
WANT SOMETHING SPECIFIC?
I'm open to commission, but won't take up every project. Head on over to my contact page & hurl me a message. |
